iPhone 17 may feature 120Hz displays, but without full ProMotion tech

Despite limitations, the potential standardization of 120Hz represents a major step forward - and for many users, finally puts 60Hz in the rearview mirror.

Rumors suggest that the entire iPhone 17 lineup will feature displays with 120Hz refresh rates, a welcome evolution from the traditional 60Hz standard. Initial expectations were that all models would adopt ProMotion, Apple's advanced display technology. However, new details suggest that not all models will have complete ProMotion capabilities.

While all Apple displays above 60Hz have historically been labeled as ProMotion, this technology goes beyond just high maximum refresh rates. ProMotion enables dynamic frequency variations, adapting to the content being displayed. For example, the iPhone 13 Pro varied from 10Hz to 120Hz, while the iPhone 14 Pro reduced the minimum to just 1Hz — ideal for battery conservation, especially with the Always-On Display feature.

The iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Air displays, however, are expected to have more limited variations, such as 60Hz, 90Hz, and 120Hz, without support for full ProMotion or LTPO (Low-Temperature Polycrystalline Oxide) technology, which is responsible for enabling refresh rates below 60Hz.

The iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max models, on the other hand, should maintain LTPO displays with ProMotion support, providing greater energy efficiency and features like the always-on display. There's no confirmation whether this feature will be expanded to non-Pro models.

Another point of uncertainty is the iPhone 17e, the more affordable version of the lineup, which may continue with a 60Hz display. It's worth noting that the "e" models will have annual releases, with the next generation expected in early 2026.

Despite the limitations, the potential standardization of 120Hz represents a significant advancement — and for many users, finally puts 60Hz technology in the past.
